While I was interested in this style primarily for the historical impact, many who have urban dwellings can also find a great selection of pieces to furnish their houses, lofts, and condos in the heart of downtown. Shaker furniture was first created by a religious sect. This group crafted pieces for use in their own homes, and also sold many of their items to others outside the sect as a way to make a living. The history of their craftsmanship has lived on as other manufacturers have adopted the style and tweaked it a bit to make it more useful in modern times. One thing I particularly love about Shaker furniture is the amount of storage that can be incorporated into a single, beautiful piece.
