Although there usually appears to be little or no actual physical damage in hyperacusis, sometimes there might be some. For example, the disorder might follow a head injury such as a severe blow to the head. Neck injuries can be at fault, too. One of these could be whiplash.

An adverse reaction to drugs, withdrawal from certain drugs, or to surgeries may be causes of hyperacusis.
