LASIK surgery has been increasing in popularity over the past 15 years since it was introduced around the early 1990s. Millions of people have since had their vision corrected and restored. But LASIK is constantly evolving as well, and there are other alternatives to it too.
One of the alternatives is LASEK. This surgery involves cutting a much thinner corneal flap, which lessens the risk of vision complications like pain, dry eyes and scarring. LASEK is similar to PRK, or Photorefractive keratectomy.
Another LASIK alternative is interocular implants (IOL). This operation is sometimes carried out for hyperopia or farsightedness, and also for cataracts. It involves implanting an artificial lens into the eye.
